Before there were yoga "classes", people would see a yoga teacher one-on-one. They would describe their particular issues and the teacher would give them yoga poses and practices designed specifically for them.
Every body is different, this is the origin of yoga as therapy.

About Chris

I was in my teens in the mid-80's when I was introduced to yoga. Unlike most people, it was the philosophy that got me first. I read "Autobiography of a Yogi" and I was hooked. As a teenager (and future adult) with anxiety, I loved the idea of transcending suffering, of finding peace and contentment. In college at Rutgers University, I majored in music with a minor in Eastern Philosophy. To this day, I am still finding similarities in the practice of yoga and the practice of music.
It wasn't until after college that I began to practice asana (pose) yoga. I traveled many times to Nepal and India through the 90's and studied a variety of styles and practices from silent Buddhist retreats to Astanga and Vinyasa styles. Back here in Nashville I was working under the guidance of an instructor with the intent to become a yoga teacher.
It was in the summer of '00 that a dumb move on a trampoline left me with a broken L5 vertebra.
After a year of physical therapy and chiropractic care, I was still in constant pain and having difficulty even tying my shoes without having to lie on the couch. It was about this time when I ran into a teacher who led me to the therapeutic benefits found in the practice of yoga as taught by BKS Iyengar.
I took one private lesson and was very quickly sold on the method and approach of using asana as therapy.
The focus on refining poses in a way to help specific health issues, the use of props, the sequencing of poses according to a particular need, this was a revelation for me.
After about a year, I was able to join regular classes and after 4 years, I started teaching.

In 2009 I became a certified Iyengar Yoga instructor.
Decades later, I'm still learning and teaching, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share the practice that has been life changing for me.
